The Best Garden Wedding Venues In Utah

A garden can be a beautiful setting for your wedding. Photo by Claire Marika Photography

Who doesn’t love a garden wedding!? It’s the perfect meeting of classic elegance and beautiful nature. A garden is the ideal setting for a wedding. It feels both intimate and elegant. You’ll be able to enjoy the sounds of birdsong and wind through trees, breathe fresh air scented with growing flowers, and let your guests meander along garden paths and over soft grass.

With so much natural beauty already packed into a garden setting, you can take advantage of what’s already there and keep your decorations simple. Bring in some personal touches to add your own flavor, or opt for decor that enhances the surroundings rather than overwhelming them. Depending on the space you have, you can craft different areas for your guests to enjoy. Create a lounge area with a couch and some seating under a trellis, or a spot for guests to play lawn games like cornhole or croquet.

If you have enough time before your wedding, try to visit your potential garden venue around the same time of year as when you plan to get married. That way you’ll be able to see how things look and what’s blooming then. Better yet, visit at the same time of day to get a sense of the lighting too. If you’re planning on a shorter timeline, ask the venue for photos of the garden around your wedding date, or see if your photographer has shot a wedding there during that time of year. Getting a sense for the way the garden will look come wedding time will help you to plan better.

The climate in Utah makes garden venues a wonderful option for spring, summer, and fall weddings. May through September are safe bets for outdoor festivities, though it’s good to have a contingency plan in case of rain. Rent a covered tent, or choose a venue with an indoor option to make sure your wedding won’t be ruined by an unexpected rain shower. Also be aware of potential nuisances like bugs. You are outdoors after all! I’ve seen couples provide a table with thoughtful items for guests, like insect repellant, sunscreen, fans, cozy blankets for cool evenings, or flip flops so they can kick off their shoes and relax.

If you like the idea of saying “I do” outdoors surrounded by flowers and greenery, a garden wedding venue might be just right. Read on to see my recommendations for the best garden venues in Utah.

Red Butte Gardens

Set against the foothills of the Wasatch Mountains on the eastern edge of the city, Red Butte Gardens is Utah’s largest Botanical Garden and Arboretum. The grounds occupy 100 acres and offer stunning views of the entire Salt Lake Valley sprawling to the west and mountain peaks to the east. 21 acres of the grounds are cultivated into beautiful display gardens featuring native plants. Some favorite spots include the Rose Garden, Fragrance Garden, Oak Tunnel, Water Garden, and many more.

Red Butte Gardens offer two indoor and two outdoor wedding spaces. Many couples choose to pair an outdoor ceremony in the Fragrance Garden with a reception in the Orangerie, and a Rose Garden ceremony flows naturally into a reception in the Rose House. With such timeless natural beauty and a wonderful wedding staff to help make sure things run smoothly, Red Butte Gardens is one of my favorite wedding venues in Utah.

The Orangerie

The Orangerie is a large indoor conservatory that can host events year round. Huge window walls to the east and west let in lots of natural light. Climbing exotic plants and flowering trees bring the outdoors in. The Orangerie opens to a large patio space for an indoor/outdoor event, and the rest of the gardens are just steps away.

The Fragrance Garden

The Fragrance Garden is a beautiful outdoor space for a wedding ceremony. Stone paths wind through waist high fragrant flowers, purple wisteria drips from the large arbor in the spring, and mountain and valley vistas surround the space. There’s room under the arbor for a ceremony setup, and cozy bench swings are positioned around the perimeter of the garden. It’s like a peaceful slice of heaven.

The Rose Garden

The Rose Garden is manicured perfection, with a large lawn and sweeping rose arbors on all sides. The nearby waterfall adds to the beauty of the landscape and soundscape. Next to the lawn, sun dappled stone walls form a second circular rose garden with benches and shaded spots to take in the surrounding beauty.

The Rose House

The Rose House is a smaller indoor space with large window walls that open to a lovely shaded patio. There are great views of the foothills, and the two rose gardens and waterfall garden are just around the corner. This is a quiet and intimate corner of Red Butte Gardens that is just perfect for smaller gatherings.

Located midway between Salt Lake City and Provo, Thanksgiving Point is a sprawling property with intricate gardens, waterfalls, streams, fountains, covered bridges, open lawns, and Italian inspired outdoor loggias. They offer a wide variety of full service wedding packages, and also allow customization so you can tailor their services to fit your day.

The crown jewel of Thanksgiving Point is Ashton Gardens, a 55 acre botanical garden with miles of meandering walkways and 15 different themed gardens. Ashton Gardens has two main outdoor wedding areas, the Italian Garden and the Rose Garden. If you’d prefer to be married in a different area of the gardens, you can choose a customized site for your festivities--perhaps in front of the largest manmade waterfall in the western hemisphere, or in the walled secret garden. There is also a large indoor wedding space that overlooks the gardens. The Garden Room allows for year round events and can accomodate a large group.

The Italian Garden

The Italian Garden is dominated by a grand open air staircase and cascading fountain surrounded by flowers. Tall trees and hedges on both sides separate this area from the rest of the gardens, making it both grand and intimate. There is a large open lawn at the foot of the staircase and fountain so that you can set up chairs for a ceremony or tables for a reception.

The Rose Garden

The Rose Garden is a large open space next to the Monet Pond, with a semi-circular arbor, climbing roses, and beautifully cultivated rose beds all around. There’s plenty of space on the lawn for a ceremony or reception setup.

Another beautiful area of the property at Thanksgiving Point is Water Tower Plaza. Here you’ll find shops, restaurants, and two lovely outdoor wedding venues tucked into private garden areas. There are also two spaces for indoor events, The Velvet Room and The Rose Room. The most romantic areas at Water Tower Plaza are the two outdoor wedding spaces in the Reception Gardens.

The Loggia

The Loggia is Thanksgiving Point’s most popular wedding venue. One side of the space is dominated by an elegant colonnade that makes a perfect backdrop. Tall trees on all sides enclose the space, a fountain runs through the center, and the far end of the loggia garden features flowering vines and arbors. In the center there’s room for a draped tent so that you can enjoy the space in any weather.

Hidden Falls

Hidden Falls is a secluded garden area surrounded by tall trees and flowers. A waterfall and stream run through the garden. There’s a gazebo, open lawn, and beautiful flowers on all sides. It’s the perfect space for more intimate groupings.
